All Stars Focus on Ability

About this Short Film

All Stars Focus on Ability, by St Joseph's HS Aberdeen (Australia, 2014), captures participants' reflections on the eponymous event, a lively school night where people push past initial awkwardness to dance, connect and build confidence. Told in candid, upbeat voices, the film foregrounds first-hand talk about taking a risk, making friends, joining activities and finding motivation, offering a warm, honest portrait rather than a polished spectacle. Its accessible, encouraging tone will appeal to students, educators and community groups interested in inclusion and youth engagement, inviting audiences to consider the simple but powerful rewards of trying something new. A natural fit for the Focus on Ability festival.

Film Transcript

So go straight to why you're here tonight. We'll get down while the moon. Talk to me with your hands; I'll show you how this dance goes, baby. You feel shake. They don't wanna believe in us, but that's 'cause they don't trust. Talk to me with your hands; I'll show you how this dance goes, baby. You feel so good. We'll be the night before. Have you now motivation to speak? Look at us—religion—but you got no conviction to carry you back. Oh, other people to get in, have a go.

It's always daunting to do something new or very strange, but once you dive in you get past that awkward stranger zone. You can have a lot of fun, make a lot of friends and be a bit more confident about yourself. Well, if you haven't been to All Stars, you haven't really seen what happens. Everyone talks about and talks it up and how good it is; they don't realise that they're actually underestimating it. It's better to see people coming out smiling, getting involved in activities, always willing to have a goal as well. Everyone talks about it, but really you should just try it for yourself.
