Dad's Army

About this Short Film

Dad's Army, a 2016 school short from Warrawong High School (Australia), presents a playful, student-led pastiche of wartime sketches—singing and slapstick centred on a mock platoon's antics with a waterproof vest demonstration, clumsy mine-laying and the perennial refrain Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler. The film's perspective is clearly from an energetic school ensemble, leaning into affectionate parody and physical comedy, marked by quick exchanges, staged mishaps and a jaunty musical beat. Audiences can expect light-hearted humour, nostalgic nods and the communal creativity of a school production; it works well for family viewers, teachers and festival audiences looking for upbeat, performance-driven shorts. A spirited school contribution to the Focus on Ability programme.

Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler?

If we get around, man, today I will show you the new waterproof vest.

Are we demonstrating the bulletproof vest in person? Are you ready, Sergeant? Yes, sir.

Now I have to lean forward, brace myself, because the impact of the bullet is very powerful. Are you ready, Sergeant? Yes, sir.

Sergeant, you fool. Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler?

That's enough. Pro Johnson, can you place it on here? Go on. What happened to you? Head it there, sir. Don't ask.

Anyways, when Sergeant Pry gets here I need you to use this. But, sir, it's upside down. Exactly.

Good morning, Corporal. It's me, Sergeant Pry. I'm here. Oh, Sergeant Pry, can you please wait over here while I put your chart on? Of course. Read from the fourth line up, Sergeant. Yes.

Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler, if you think we're on the road?

What are you doing? Oh—morning, sir. Minefield laying, sir. I have laid 15. But, Sergeant, the main point of laying mines is so no one can see them; you left lumps everywhere. Oh, sorry, sir. Pass me the shovel. Now all we do is we smooth the top like this and give it a little tap. We'll make it again, 'cause who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler, if you think old England—

The lack of beds in this hospital is a real problem. Oh, I know what the real problem is.
