Film Transcript

My name is Cassandra Bill Mat‑Su. I work with You Are International and I'm a biker.

The first time I got on a bike was when I was 15 years old. That was my parents' life. Everyone is different and we have different passions and different interests. Mine is biking and I feel much more comfortable on the bike. I enjoy biking; I love everything to do with the bike — the best feel, the way the bike moves, the response of the bike. To make it really, really interesting, it helps me.

I had encountered different challenges when I go; now the same place is filled with guys who put both legs when it comes to taking corners, speeds and injuries. So I will race, yes, but on a different platform, probably — or not. Everybody — where everybody's disabled, so on — and people crowd because I can't.

My best moment on the bike was on 11 October 2015. That was when I was participating in the 660 category, Supermoto. We were doing crazy speeds and, for a moment, I think I forgot about everything in the world. The only thing I owned, the only thing important, was the bike. When I was getting into a corner very, very fast — around 200 km/h — there's something called traction on a bike. We use the rubber heat; the more heat, the more grip. It's different to cars: cars use treads to grip, whereas on a bike we use the temperature of the tyres to grip. I lost structure — my rear tyre lost structure. When it ripped apart, we lost my front wheel; that caused a complete slide of the bike.

It has been a challenging moment both emotionally and physically, because apart from the things I used to do on a daily basis — like going to the gym, going in the morning for cycling — I had to change and stop for a while so that I could figure a way out. When I heard about the accident — I was there when the accident happened — so it was really hard. I cried a lot. It was a very painful experience. It took time for me to come home; I couldn't walk.

Emotionally it was a big deal, but I told myself I would not allow anything to stop me, so I kept encouraging myself. My biggest life motto is always: accept anything you can't change. I think, when we love something, that's one of the reasons that is good, because I looked up my dreams at that moment after and compared to how I viewed my dreams. One thing that was very, very vivid to me was that even though I dreamt of achieving my dreams, I didn't remove achieving my dreams with my drift — that really did not change anything. I still stuck to my dreams. I told myself, okay, you have to go with or without the bike; there is no bike in your future and there is no bike in my dreams — so I told myself I haven't lost anything in my dreams.
