About this Short Film
When you can see me, I can see you (2018) from Bendigo Special Developmental School invites a thoughtful pause on perception, belonging and respect. The short uses moments of lived experience to highlight how children and teenagers with diverse cognitive, sensory and physical disabilities are seen and understood. It does not prescribe answers but opens space for quieter kinds of attention, where small gestures and shared moments matter. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, the film contributes to a broader conversation about inclusion and individuality, celebrating the creativity and voices of young people with disability in Australia.

I like standing tall. I like playing with a ball. I like filling the grass on my feet. I could be the nicest person you will ever meet. I am just like you in many ways, but I might be shy in the early days.
I can learn and I can dream, like I'm floating gently, Dennis dream. I dream I'm swinging on the monkey bars. I dream I'm onstage with the stars.
I can be a good friend, you'll see. Just come down to my level and meet me. We can be silly together. We can laugh forever.
There's just a few simple rules to know by heart. Saying hello is the start. Waiting for me to respond is next. I can feel your love and respects, and when you can see me I can see you. And just like that, our friendship grew.
