Breaking Boundaries, directed by Kizito Gamba (Kenya, 2023), is presented in the Focus on Ability programme. The short explores themes of achievement, attitude and inclusion, drawing on hip-hop and dance to reflect on motivation and individuality. It speaks to the experiences of children and teenagers living with physical disability and amputation, inviting audiences to reconsider common assumptions about ability. The film offers a fresh Kenyan perspective within the festival’s line-up, using movement and youthful energy to open a conversation about participation, resilience and self-expression. A concise, affecting piece that complements our celebration of diverse talents and voices.
Dance, make a move. Kick. Slide. When I say change, dance, make love, fun. Slide. I see nobody, nobody but you, you, you. I love you. Glow bila dance si glow. Dance, make a move. Dance ni glow. Enye tu nakusanga kuenda dance ni maybe tujua mbu. Venye sai, kama ni kona kidonda, siyeze ndani dance juta kwa worse. So inabidi tu nikai home kwanza niponi kiasi alafu nirudi. Kama saiso nalimbika wiki mbili kasi gender dance. Juu daktari mwenye alimtengene za mgu. Mbali, dada aliongia na ya, kase ma. Ata, as in tuongoje kiasi, anarudi, but akufa. But kama ngekua, ngekua nisha ato ngenezewa. But nuna saya kumbali, itabidi nime mwongoja. As in watu wenge utuko yu advantage kusema, mi neza kushinda juu as in ni kona mgumbili, na we as in ni kona one and a half. So mi na, as in nakanga ya sema ni aache, ni si aache, but najipianga tu yu ngubu na sema lazima nita make. Yu feeling na yu believe nye neza, as in neza dance bila kusumbulua na mgu. So, as in mi na, as in yu mgu ime nibamba sana kushindele ngine. As in ime nibamba sana. Juu i, ni kuajustu ile ngine bago utengenezewe, tina uende. Nyona yu ni process. Itu ni daktari anakuja, anajustu ala kuna ribishio. Mini ituwa Gloria na Dancing with Hip Hop.

Testament that artistic expression cannot be confined and it can spring out anywhere. As Tupacs poem says Did you hear about the rose that grewfrom a crack in the concreteProving nature's law is wrong itlearned to walk with out having feet.Funny it seems but by keeping its dreamsit learned to breathe fresh air.Long live the rose that grew from concretewhen no one else ever cared.
