Naragebup

About this Short Film

Naragebup, by Jayden Meakins (Australia, 2023), is a short film that explores themes of animals, employment and young adulthood within the context of intellectual disability. Presented at the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, it showcases the abilities, experiences and achievements of people with disability. The film offers an intimate, grounded view that encourages reflection on work, companionship and independence without simplifying its subjects. It is a quietly powerful addition to our program, reminding audiences of the variety of ways people navigate everyday life and pursue purpose. We are proud to present it.

Film Transcript

My name's Jayden, I work with the Periscope Group and I also work for the Rockingham Environmental Centre where I also look after animals and care for them. These are community gardens and we let people plant whatever they want in there. These are jumbo stick insects, they can grow twice as big as they are normally. These are actual bones from actual animals, so this is an actual turtle bone. This is the reptile display where we have snakes, lizards and frogs. I'm just trying to make sure, I think this one is the one with the bad neck. We've got a couple of lowies, we've got a bander shark, a spied whale and a cobbler fish. We do workshops here, we also have parties in this room and this is where I have my 21st speech. These guys like to accidentally eat my finger. These are our bobtails or witch bugs if you want to say it another way. We have about four bobtails here and the thing that bobtails do is they can store, they're the only reptiles that can store food in their tails for months. This is where we use the four bobtails to keep away the bugs.

Jaden has done a great job getting this film completed so other viewers can appreciate some of our native creatures and wildlife. He has put a lot of thought into the production giving as much information as possible for others to understand what happens at Naragebup centre. We done Jaden.
