Bird Boy

About this Short Film

Noah Matthews Matofsky's Bird Boy (United Kingdom, 2025) offers a thoughtful exploration of themes around cognitive processing disability, Down syndrome and intellectual disability in teenage life. Rather than prescribing a single view, the film invites viewers to sit with the nuances of identity, communication and being a young person. Warm, observant filmmaking brings attention to everyday moments that reveal strength, struggle and humour. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, Bird Boy complements our programme by highlighting abilities, achievements and the everyday experiences of people with disability. This gentle, human film encourages conversation and reflection without offering easy answers.

If I had wings like Noah's doves I'd fly the river to the one I love. A moody and magnificent walk around the seaside with the sweeping piano preparing the way for ascension and flight

Bird Boy draws us into his engagement with birds. Piano accompaniment mesmerising creating different moods . Loved it. Fed birds from a plate lovely shot. Simple film but powerful. Liked Bird Boys close up serene face engaging eyes. Finally he takes flight joining the murmuration. I was there with him

Wow I just watched this short film. I was mesmerised and intrigued by the sense of other-worldliness of BirdBoy. That piano accompaniment was really moving. I felt like I was on that Pier and catching glimpses of BirdBoy and wondering where he came from and how he become what he is. Is he alive Is he dead Am I imagining him What a fantastic short
