A Glimpse of Their World

About this Short Film

A Glimpse of Their World (East Victoria Park Education Support Centre, Australia, 2022) offers a brief, thoughtful look at school life through the perspectives of young people with cognitive processing and intellectual disability. The short film gently celebrates preferences, friendships and group routines without spectacle, giving space to everyday moments and favourite things that matter to the students. Shot by an education support centre, it sits comfortably in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival as a piece that highlights abilities, experiences and achievements often overlooked. Warm, respectful and direct, it invites audiences to slow down and notice the small, meaningful details of school community life.

Film Transcript

My name is Samuel Watts. How old are you? I'm 11 years old. I'm Samuel's first year. I got it a couple weeks ago, last week when it was term one, and I'm trying my hardest to become an officer. I'm 13 years old. I'm a second year student. I'm Samuel's first year. At school we all get to have fun and learn and pay respect to everybody. Iron Man. I'm in first year. Okay, any reason why you like Iron Man? Oh cause he's Tony Stark. He's a billionaire. He's the funniest person in the world. Want to become a police officer? Yes. Want to become a police officer? Protecting the law, being kind, and also helping out people that have troubles. And also protecting people like my mom. Because I love my mom very much. Makes me feel really happy when I always get to see her every morning. Even when I go to school I always say I love you mom. It makes me feel happy. And I love my mom so very much. My name's Cameron Edwards. I'm 11. I'm a student leader for the school. And I have a responsibility to make sure that I listen to the teachers. Help if they need it. Help them. A policeman. Because I get to have a taser. And a bat to go. To the criminals. To get them into prison. Black Panther. Why? Because he's made of vibranium. And he's got the M.I.V.E. I don't know. I don't know. So I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. So I'm the M.I.V.E. So I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. Black Panther. Why? Because he's made out of vibranium. But he's the king of his home. Well, yes! Yeah? How old are you? Eight. And I'm a titan slash! I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm the M.I.V.E. I'm M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. M.I.V.E. Ma'am, I miss you. And how old are you? I'm six, a seven years old. I have to go to school and be a good boy. I'm Tisha. Debbie. We say good school. Say bye. Bye. Can I kiss? Say bye. Bye. See you later alligator.
