Not The First

About this Short Film

Not The First (The Kasungu Film Collective, Malawi, 2023) examines how sightlines and assumptions shape how we see one another. The short film draws attention to themes of congenital and physical disability, wheelchair use, prejudice, stereotypes and stigma, and invites viewers to reconsider common viewpoints. It also touches on group dynamics and the everyday work of a mechanic, without offering easy answers. Shot with a clear, human gaze, the film fits neatly into the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, where stories highlight the abilities, experiences and achievements of people with disability. A thoughtful, conversation-starting piece.
