Ten years ago, Focus On Ability (FOA) started as NOVA Employment CEO Martin Wren’s ‘good idea’ to promote inclusion of people with disability and has grown into an international sensation. In 2017, we received a total of 210 entries from 19 different countries. Nearly half the entries came from young people – 101 entries from schools, mostly from Australia and New Zealand.
Many careers have been launched from writers, directors, actors and producers participating in and/or winning this very accessible short film competition. With $150,000 in cash and prizes on offer this year, there’s also a significant boost to winning filmmakers’ budgets.
Yet FOA always stays true to its roots, as Martin Wren reminds us. “We’re all about inclusion. That’s why FOA is free to enter and free to attend.” Every September, the gala awards night is an inspiring, emotional and accessible night out on the town with food and drink, music and stories, tears and laughter. “It’s a great night out,” Martin says.
